Entrepreneurship Reaches Into Label Printing Company
Burr Ridge, IL
February 27, 2006
The printing industry has gone through numerous changes over the past
fifty-years and Central Decal, a manufacturer of flexo/screen, domed,
and digitally printed labels have seen it all. As vice president Howard
Kaplan put it "It has always been a central initiative of ours to
be on the forefront of technology and provide our customers with the
best product possible." All of this has culminated with the birth
of Engineered GraFX a subsidiary of Central Decal. EG is dedicated
solely to manufacturing labels for In-Mold Labeling the newest buzz
in the plastic world.
In-Mold Labeling has been a widely used process across Europe, however
is in its beginning stages in North America. IML is when a label is
inserted into a mold prior to the injection of plastic resin. The
label is most commonly inserted using static or vacuum processes.
There are numerous costs saving and value-added benefits associated
with IML.
In-Mold labeling allows for a more flexible graphic in regards to
formed or shaped surfaces. The label mechanically and chemically becomes
part of the plastic product, therefore lowering scrap rate or faulty
parts. This can be especially attractive to products displaying a
warning label due to liabilities. IML also eliminates secondary operations,
which combines two steps in one.
Engineered GraFX is capable of printing In-Mold Labels using screen,
flexo, or digital. There is flexibility in terms of lead-time and
quantity sizes due to all processes being in-house. EG and Central
Decal have produced over 5 million In-Mold labels and all labels
have
been either outdoor durable or automotive grade. Central Decal has
been working with outdoor durable goods since 1957. Engineered GraFX
is a small company with big company capabilities in terms of R&D,
production, and service.
Central Decal and Engineered GraFX is a 40,000 foot facility located
in Burr Ridge, IL. CD and EG are UL complaint and hold QS 9000 and
ISO 14000 quality procedures. Central Decal has also be recognized
by The Specialty Image Graphic Association I with the 2005 Environmental
Recognition Award.

Central Decal Presented SGIA's 2005 Environmental
Recognition Award
Burr Ridge, IL
January 2, 20/06
The Specialty Image Graphic Association announced Central Decal, a
manufacture of high-pressured, flexographic, digital, and In-Molding
labels, as a recipient of the 2005 Environmental Recognition Award.
SGIA's Environmental Recognition Program acknowledges the role environmental
issues play in today's business world by honoring organizations at
the forefront of environmental performance. This was Central Decal's
first year of recognition.
Central Decal takes a holistic approach to their Environmental Management
System—involving suppliers, customers, and employees. Vice President
Howard Kaplan sees engaging suppliers as one of the most critical
and challenging aspect of CD's current environmental strategy. "It
was a very important goal of ours to attain, and later maintain, and
we needed our suppliers to be as active and enthusiastic about it
as we are."
The efforts also encompass both employees and customers. These efforts
essentially began 20 years ago when UV inks were introduced into the
facility, followed by water-based adhesives. Central Decal reflects
annually on the effects of their products on the environment, community,
and employees. Future improvements include upgrading their EMS to
the newly revised ISO 14000 standard, as well as long-term goals to
identify products to convert to more environmentally friendly options. "These projects usually take some time to allow for full vendor participation
and testing within our processes," Mr. Kaplan said.
Central Decal is a 40,000 square foot facility located in Burr Ridge,
IL. The company was started 49 years ago and specialized in pressure
sensitive, flexographic, and digital labels. CD's division Engineered
GraFX concentrates solely on In-Mold compliant labels. CD and EG are
UL complaint and hold QS 9000 and ISO 14000 quality procedures.
